Experimentation: Combining Drawings and Text
I tried combing the text and imagery on fabric because I think the table cloth needs more than just writing - without the illustration it'll be boring and monotonous. I picked a photo of my grandma and projected it onto the white board at college, I then drew onto the fabric and wrote around the piece off of the board. I asked a friend to help me do some of the writing as it was suggested during a group critique that to capture the sense of family and participation art, I'll need other people's handwriting. Since I'm not very good at handwriting, I'll see if I can get my peers, friends and family to help out.
I used the two different pens and after they dried I found they show up two completely different colours and though where I liked the thinner pen better for writing, it's barely visible under the UV. So I think I'll just use the thicker markers. The two different handwriting work well and I can imagine it with more styles and a better variety.
In terms of working with the imagery, I think it is successful, it gives the writing something to connect to, rather than just float around in obscurity which I think is useful and helps give the viewer more of an understanding of the work. It also utilities more technical skill of drawing and trying to get realistic proportions, especially in a pen that doesn't leave a mark visible in normal lighting conditions. Regardless I'm excited to explore and carry this on.
