Mock Up: Exhibition Installation
After having a brainwave with an idea of how I want my piece to look in the exhibition and after speaking to one of my tutors, I decided to make a mock up of my idea to see if it will work out quite as well as I hope it will. I decided to make it out of mount board as it is sturdy enough to hold itself up without being too heavy.
I started working out the walls. The wood I'll use is 8" by 4" so I made the scale as 1" being 1 inch so it was easy to convert in my head. I'll need 4 pieces of wood per wall, which works out at 8 altogether which could be expensive - I'll need to check with my tutor. I cut the walls out of the mount board and stuck them together with masking tape, they weren't cut very evenly but you get the idea of what I'm trying to create. I stuck too flat and then either side added another board but angled them to create a kind of octagon shape. I'm not sure where this shape came from but it could be because my own dining room is shaped like that, I'm not sure. I like that it closes in, it creates a sense of being surrounded as we are with family.
I then created an (almost) mirrored version on the other side and attached them to the board with masking tape again. I then set about making a table. After googling the measurements, a table is usually 2.5" by 5" so I just changed that to inches for the top. I then made the legs at just over 2" and attached them with masking tape. The table stood up but I had to double the legs to make a corner piece, kind of like with the walls. I then repeated this for the chairs, of which I made 4. It was really fiddly and they're kind of awful but I'm actually really proud. I'm not good at making models so this was a pretty good attempt on my part. I also probably used too much masking tape but at least they stand up and look vaguely like chairs.
I then primed some fabric and cut it to just over the size of the table for the table cloth. I will be using primed fabric so this part at least is realistic. I did had a little bit of trouble getting the fabric to stay in shape as the primer makes it really stiff, however I bent it and eventually masking taped it down. so it stayed in place.
I then placed it in the walls and could appreciate my hard work, even f it was a little shoddy and uneven. it actually works and looks like a table and most things are even so I'm counting it as a huge success. I didn't even cry. It was also really motivating to see the mock up as it gave me an actual physical idea of what my piece will look like. I'm excited.
