Experimentation: Drawing Styles, Grandad
I used tracing paper and then cut up plastic wallets (because I ran out of tracing paper) to get a basic shape of the image. I started with the picture of my Grandad when he was younger to get the basic kind lines. I then moved on to the other pictures as I haven't drawn them as much as the this one. I drew these out in Sharpie so I could see the style easier than in the UV pen and change it accordingly. I tried drawing the whole image with minimal line, then just using the distinctive features, and then again merging the two pictures together.
I liked using minimal line, but I still feel I used too many in the initial two experiments, I think the amount of detail would be distracting in Ultraviolet but it worked better than the other two experiments on these photos. I did like the main features experiment as it was still recognisably my Grandad, but the style was simple enough that it wasn't so obvious to those with no former context. However, the style is an almost comedic, caricature effect which isn't what I want, I want an element of seriousness in the photos to reflect that of the words. Merging didn't work well as I didn't line the pictures up correctly and the sizing is very different, it may work better if done in one pen and then with the UV pen on top of it. I need to try it to find out.
