Experimentation: Drawing Styles, Mum

I then tried a more minimal drawing with the picture of my mum. I really tried hard not to use any details or particularly long lines, after that I tried a continuous line in the style of Boris Schmitz and then with only specific details. Again, I used Sharpie and cut up plastic wallet over the UV pen, so I could see and reflect on the experiments with more ease.

Out of all of them, I only like the minimal line experiment, I think it's sweet and captures the essence of the image without too much or too little detail. When my mum saw the drawing in my book she said she recognised the picture immediately which was really positive feedback and told me I'd pretty much do what I hoped to achieve.

As much as I love Boris Schmitz's work, I don't think the continuous line is appropriate in this project and the actual drawing reminds me of a clown's make-up rather than my mother which isn't ideal. In this context, the line is just distracting and takes away from the drawing instead of adding to it. I definitely prefer the broken up, minimal line in comparison.

The last experiment was a development of the main features experiment I did of my Grandad's photo. I don't know if I picked the wrong features but it still had that caricature feel that doesn't work in context with the project. I definitely feel the minimal line works for what I want and I'm going to try reducing the lines even further as well as on other images and in the UV pen.
